A variegated Monstera that starts putting out solid green leaves can feel like a real loss, especially on a plant that carried a premium specifically for its variegation. This is called reversion, and understanding what actually causes it changes what’s worth trying — and what isn’t.

What Reversion Actually Is
Variegation in many Monstera is chimeral, meaning the plant contains genetically different cell populations. A new shoot’s appearance depends on which of those cell populations are present in its active meristem. If a growth point contains only green tissue, it will produce green growth. Those green shoots may then outgrow variegated portions because they contain more chlorophyll and can photosynthesize more efficiently.
What You Can Influence
- Light: Bright indirect light helps support a variegated Monstera because its white or pale tissue produces little or no energy through photosynthesis. Appropriate light can support the plant’s overall health, but it does not determine which cell populations are present in a growth point. It cannot prevent true genetic reversion or recreate variegated tissue once it is absent.
- Pruning: Cutting back to just above a leaf or node that shows strong variegation, and removing growth from fully green, reverted sections, is the standard approach to try to redirect the plant’s growth toward the genetic lines you want. It works by removing the competing green growth point, not by “convincing” the plant to change.
What You Cannot Change
- An already fully green leaf will not turn variegated later, regardless of light, fertilizer, or anything else. The pattern on an existing leaf is fixed once it’s grown.
- You can’t increase a plant’s variegation beyond what its genetics support by adjusting care. Care can influence which existing growth points the plant favors — it can’t create new variegated genetic material that isn’t there.
- Fertilizing more, or any other attempt to “push” the plant, doesn’t fix or prevent reversion, and can push growth, including unwanted green growth, faster than intended.
Pruning for Variegation: The Practical Approach
Find the node where the plant’s growth has clearly gone fully green, and cut back to the closest point above it that still shows meaningful variegation. This removes the green growing tip and gives a variegated node the chance to become the plant’s new active growth point. It’s a commonly used approach, not a guaranteed fix — some plants respond well, while others revert again from the new growth point.
Kathleen has tried this approach repeatedly on one Monstera, cutting it back several times in an effort to recover its variegation. So far, every new shoot has remained completely green. She continues to give the plant bright, appropriate light and suitable growing conditions to support healthy growth, but those conditions cannot create variegation if the remaining growth points contain only green tissue. Her experience illustrates the uncertainty of pruning: cutting back may give another node or dormant bud an opportunity to grow, but variegation can return only if that growth point still contains variegated tissue. There is no guarantee that it will.
Common Mistakes
- Over-fertilizing to try to “fix” reversion. More fertilizer tends to push faster growth generally, which can mean more green growth, not less.
- Cutting too aggressively, all at once, in a way that stresses the plant significantly rather than making a single clean cut back to a good node.
- Confusing normal leaf-to-leaf variegation variation — some leaves on a stable, healthy variegated plant naturally have more or less white than others — with true reversion, which is a genuine downward trend across new growth, not just one leaf looking different from the last.
Experienced buyers often assess a plant’s visible variegation — as well as the variegation around its stem, nodes, and active growth points — when deciding what they are willing to pay. In Kathleen’s experience, buyers commonly make substantially lower offers when a plant shows little or no current variegation. Clear, current photographs and an accurate description are therefore essential, particularly when the exact plant shown is the one being sold. Buyers should evaluate the plant primarily on what it is showing at the time of sale, not on the uncertain possibility that stronger variegation may appear later.
